Probably one of the biggest complaints I hear when speaking to people that attend my bootcamp is, that they do not have control of their time. Time management continues to plague both entrepreneurs and corporate contributors alike. There are dozens of courses around touting their spin on the same principles.
My question to them is, “Have you ever heard of Akem’s Razor?” Simply put, the theory states that the simplest and easiest path to a solution is usually the right one. So how does this apply to time management? Well, if you were to strip away all the electronic calendars, and schedules and priority lists and piles and piles of books and seminars, the art of time management can summed up with two (2) letter… N O !!
In this world of job loss, more with less, downsizing and re-organizing, people are caught up in the perceived need to say YES to everything that is thrown their way. While it may seem important for job security, what happens when you have said yes so much that things start to fall off of your plate and then get lost in the mix? In reality, the opposite result occurs. You end up looking less competent and therefore jeopardize your job. It becomes an overwhelming task to stay on top of all the requests that you have taken ownership of.
My challenge to you is this: Use the word NO just twice as much as you use it today, and notice the time that you free up for doing the things that are high on your priority list. Say NO three times as much as find time to not only get your work done, but also have time for a hobby. Hard to believe? Give it a try and comment to this post with what you discover.
