Food For Thought this President’s Day
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness..”
I would submit to you that our founding fathers had no intention of creating great gaps in class or privilege.On the contrary, they knew that in order for their dream of a free and independent nation to take hold, that the very salt of the earth needed to prosper and proclaim that the war and its casualties were not in vain.
Therefore it is only proper that today, as you look at you life, you should evaluate if you are in fact making the best use of that freedom… That you are taking advantage and honoring your RIGHT to prosper in the great country. In the beginning every man who was not a slave, was an entrepreneur. They molded their own destiny by learning a trade or using their natural talents to earn a wage or fee. Even the free men that worked for another, saved their pay and either bought a farm that allowed them to work for themselves, or opened their own shop to possibly even compete with those who taught them their trade.
“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Since that time, we have prospered in many ways. We have ade great strides in civil liberties, and equality. For the first time in the history of the US, we have an African American President. The racial bridge while not complete, has shortened the gap to create an achievement that people like MLK would only dream about. Although there is still a gender gap in corporate America, no one can argue that women today hold some of the prestigious positions in the world. They also control over 60% of the country’s wealth and more than 70% of the spending power. With that said, now more than ever is the time for people from all walks of life to grab hold of their dream and claim their future.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Finally, I would like to point out that we have the bravest of the brave from this country fighting our fight. If we squander what they are dying to protect, then we have done them and our country a great disservice. Now more than ever, this country needs us all to do our part to return it to the greatness that it has enjoyed for more than 2 centuries. By simply not letting anyone steal your dream and by standing up and claiming your future, you ensure that the ideals that our forefathers fought and gave their lives so that we might today enjoy their great vision, you can make the words of Lincoln and Washington, Jefferson and the like come to life. Be proud, and take ownership of your life and country’s destiny.
